Lopburi Zoo
A 25-acre zoo is well known for its interesting residents: Asian
and Australian birds and mammals. The most striking feature of the zoo
is the unusual family of three tigers and four dogs who live
harmoniously together in the same quarters. The zoo is located behind
the Army Theatre near the Sa Kaew Circle. Opens daily from 8.00 a.m. –
6.00 p.m
Operated by the Army and very inexpensive to get in, Lopburi zoo is a welcome addition to you itinery if you are staying in our around Lopburi. Being that Lopburi has so many monkeys living with the old town, it is of no surprise that there are also many monkeys featured here. Monkeys that have been injured while living "wild" in the old town are brought here for medical treatment and recuperation.
Not an international class zoo aimed at tourism, Lopburi Zoo seems to care very well for it's animals and has had few complaints that many of the other "comercially run" zoos have been subject to. In saying that, many would judge any kind of Orangutan show as exploitative these days.
There are a couple of shows that you can take in, although it may be best to check if they are running on the day you want to go as some only run at weekends. A orangutan show, a snake show and a thai dancing ( lopburi style ) show are often included for the remarkable entrance price of 10 baht. The only other money you will need is to feed the animals or fish as well as food and drink while in the complex.
