Lopburi is located 150 km north of Bangkok. It houses interesting historical monuments and a national museum with lots of archaeological finds.

We use Lopburi as a hub for many Culture Holidays as it is only two hours from Bangkok and a great place to start end. We now have three self contained townhouses in Lopburi that we rent out for tourists. We operate day tours from this location as well as airport pickups and drop offs.

Lopburi had its greatest days during the Ayudhaya period, when King Narai the Great made the city his second capital. A lot of diplomatic activity with western nations took place at Lopburi during that time.

Prior to the Ayudhaya period, Lopburi was a provincial capital of the Khmer empire, and this is reflected in statues and architecture.

The city is presently also known for its monkey colonies. They are present by the hundreds at Phra Prang Sam Yod, probably ruining the monument in the process. Phra Sri Mahathat is located on a large compound, housing many chedis and smaller prangs.

Each year, from some time in November until February or March, the fields around Lopburi province are filled with  bright yellow sunflowers. These are commercial crops raised for producing seeds and oil, yet they have become something of a tourist attraction.

This is a very "Thai" tourist sight. The fields aren't even mentioned in most guide books. Still, the large fields of yellow and green flowers set against the steep limestone hills surrounding the Lopburi plain are quite striking. The fields are probably not worth the trip on their own, but if visiting Lopburi at the right time of year, they are well worth the side trip.
